A Story of Surprising Kindness: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Ground

Back in 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book accommodation when I arrived, yet when I arrived, a major event was in town and all the youth hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could just sleep at the terminal – only to discover the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes 24 hours. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and began walking near a gaming venue, believing I might spend the night in a place that stayed open all night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the next morning, yet, as a broke student, I couldn’t afford.

The world needs more individuals with such compassion.

It seems I seemed out of place as a female student saw me loitering in the city center and asked if I was OK. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had taken home her evening job. I had access to a hot shower and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she accepted as a woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. Back then I was in my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance – but still deeply appreciative.

I never did attending ANU, and I didn’t meet her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish karma has repaid her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
