NY Unveils Online Platform for Citizens to Report ICE Images After Detentions of Four US Citizens
The state AG has launched a recent digital platform encouraging locals to provide visual evidence of immigration raids across New York. This action comes just a day after a high-profile enforcement action shook NYC's Chinatown, sparking widespread outcry.
US Citizens Arrested In ICE Operation
A lawmaker announced during a news conference that four US citizens were detained and held for "almost a full day" after the previous day's operation. Demonstrations broke out in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents deserves to exist without intimidation," the AG declared in a statement.
"For those who saw and recorded immigration enforcement recently, I ask you to share that footage with the authorities. We are pledged to examining these reports and evaluating any wrongdoings."
Submission Process
The platform offers spaces to send visual evidence of the incident, along with a section to indicate location information. Before submitting, submitters must check a checkbox that states that "the office might employ any evidence provided in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or public report."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The enforcement action, which onlookers say included more than 50 federal agents, happened in a popular district of NYC where counterfeit products and other goods are sold daily in large quantities – often to sightseers.
Recordings of Tuesday's raid reveal several covered and weaponized personnel securing and holding a individual, and shoving away onlookers. Throngs of residents pursued the officers down the sidewalks. An armored truck was observed moving along the city streets.
Political Response
In a news conference organized with the rights organization, the congressman, a lawmaker, announced that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be arrested for without cause." He noted the persons were released on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman said. "This represents a armed campaign to incite tension. It is merely a justification to incite violence for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to halt conflict that they themselves caused."
Widespread Condemnation
Outrage over the federal action escalated – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the federal government chooses heavy-handed tactics that create fear, instead of protection. It has to end," one mayoral candidate stated.
NYC advocacy organizations expressed outrage as well.
"Immigration agents targeted Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, masked agents and tactical gear to go after small merchants working to survive. This raid had nothing to do with citizen protection and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and communities," remarked the president of a rights organization.
Agency Rules
ICE policy prohibits the holding of citizens and the organization has stated it refrains from apprehend American nationals. However, external research has discovered that more than 170 US citizens have been held against their will by ICE since the beginning of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in New York and around the country recently.
A recent action in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Protests against federal operations are ubiquitous including accusations of force and inhumane treatment.
Latest, a document submitted by advocacy organizations claimed medical neglect of women with child in government custody.
