The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.

“It feels like force fed your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.

A Pressing Query: Has the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… in a way.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
